Counselling Skills for Health Professionals by Philip Burnard (auth.)

By Philip Burnard (auth.)

This is the second one version of a publication that i am hoping remains to be of useful price. For counselling should always be that: sensible. No quantity of speaking, by itself, can rather make a distinction if humans don't prove doing anything due to counselling. the sensible thread is still a huge one all through this variation. Counselling abilities for healthiness pros is not only a 'how to do it' e-book: everyone is most likely too complex for that method of be of a lot use. Counselling is rarely easily an issue of studying a number of talents that you then observe in a number settings. finally, counselling is ready dealing with the individual in entrance of you, hearing them conscientiously after which assisting them as they paintings via their difficulties. for lots of difficulties, there are not any effortless solutions and counselling does not supply any 'quick fixes'. it really is basically a supportive approach. there are lots of issues it can't do. It can't swap yes social and political occasions. It can't treatment ailments. nevertheless, what it might probably do is supply humans extra wish. usually, simply the truth that there's somone who's ready to listen to your tale and to hear you is all that's wanted. I stay confident that the most important factor in all kinds of counselling is the power to listen.

Thus, any sort of questions are examples of catalytic interventions. Again, used inappropriately, questions can appear interrogative and intrusive. They need to be well timed and sensitively phrased. Certain other forms of catalytic intervention may be more appropriate than questions and these are discussed further in Chapter 7. Catalytic interventions are perhaps the most useful of all interventions to the health professional. Often it is essential to explore how much a patient or client knows about their condition, prior to offering further information.

If, for example, the health professional says 'You will probably find that you will have some discomfort in your leg for about three weeks', they are using an informative intervention. Heron notes here that unskilful use of informative interventions leads to dependence on the counsellor and the relationship can degenerate, with the counselling situation becoming one of overteaching by the counsellor. As we have seen from the previous discussion on informative counselling, information is best limited to concrete situations and should not extend to 'putting your life right' information.

Without awareness we will tend to feel that any counselling interventions we make are spontaneous and not offered consciously. Now, the point of conscious use of the self is that we learn to reflect on what is happening during the counselling relationship and we choose the interventions we make. In other words, the words and phrases that we use are intended and chosen consciously, rather than their just happening. Initially, such conscious use of the self can seem awkward and clumsy. We tend to be socialized into dividing human action up into natural (and, therefore, presumably sincere) and contrived (and, therefore, presumably insincere).
