Investigators examining fractures of any kind for evidence of physical abuse must carefully consider the explanation of the incident by the caregiver before declaring a case of child abuse as not all fractures, even in an unusual location, are caused by abuse. However, a fracture can be an indicator of physical abuse; investigators must consider the possibility that a child’s fractures may be the result of a medical condition such as the rare condition of osteogenesis imperfecta, commonly referred to as brittle bone disease.
